ATEX fumes and particles
Responsible companies ensure that fumes and dusts from manufacturing processes are removed from the workplace to protect workers from illness. This is because most types of fume and dust are among the most common causes of respiratory diseases among workers in the industry.
When the environment in which the extraction takes place has a risk of explosion the design of the extraction system has to live up to the ATEX regulation.
The company having the extraction system installed has to asses, whether there is a risk of an explosion in connection with their production as a result of ignition of an atmosphere, consisting of air mixed with flammable gases, vapors, fluids, mist/aerosols or flammable dust mists. If the answer is yes, the risk must be assessed as the foundation of a classification of the area(s) in danger of explosion.
The company can make this assessment themselves, or take advantage of a specialized advisor to do this for them. Sometimes the assessment can be made together with the local fire-fighting authorities.
The ATEX zones are defined according to the substance in the airflow and the risk level.
For gasses the zones are defined as Zones 0, 1, and 2 of which the zone 0 is the strictest. The same way the zones for dust are defined as zones 20, 21, and 22 with zone 20 as the strictest. Read more about the zones below.

EXTRACTING ATEX FUMES AND FLAMMABLE DUST
WHAT IS ATEX?
The objective of ATEX is to secure uniform guidelines for the whole European Union, so that the risk of explosion and subsequent personal injury as well as damage to the machinery is minimized.
Primarily, ATEX is relevant to companies handling potentially explosive concentrations of dust from wood, aluminium, plastic, flour, sugar or other organic materials, as well as fumes and vapours from petrol, acetone and batteries.
RULES AND LEGISLATION
A common EU directive, 2014/34/EU, also known as ATEX, is attempting to reduce the risk in connection with explosive environments in the industry.
All ATEX-products from Geovent are manufactured in compliance with the directive 2014/34/EU.
It is the responsibility of the individual employer to obtain zone-classifications in the company concerned, and often this is carried out in cooperation with the local fire-fighting authorities.
For further information regarding ATEX, please also refer to the AT-instruction C.0.9 concerning dust explosions.
European companies have to asses, whether there is a risk of explosion in connection with their production as a result of ignition of an atmosphere, consisting of air mixed with flammable gases, vapours, fluids, mist/aerosols or flammable dust mists. In addition to this, the company must take precautions in order to avoid explosions and to draw up documentation.
The central principle is to divide the company into zones on basis of the risk of explosion and its consequences. In this connection, it is necessary both to consider the type and the volume of leak, ventilation, safety systems and the potential ignition sources, as for instance electrostatic charge, electrical installations and mechanically generated sparks. The assessment is to apply to existing equipment as well as to new acquisitions of machinery and equipment. A complete instruction manual can be supplied with a Geovent ATEX product as well as approved certifications.

The term “ATEX” applies to atmospheres that are potentially explosive due to the presence of dusts vapours or gases that are likely to ignite..
There are two Directives from the European Commission describing how to deal with ATEX.
- ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU is concerned with products that may be supplied for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.
- ATEX Directive1999/92/ECdeals with the precautions to be taken in workplaces where explosive atmospheres might be present due to flammable dusts vapours or gases (or mixtures of these).
The Regulations apply at most workplaces where flammable substances are stored or used, for example, factories where flammable liquids are present or where flammable dusts are produced in the process.
Examples are factories with that use spray paint and varnishes, milk drying and flour production.
The word ex-proof comes from the combination of the words “explosion proof”. It literally means explosion-proof. Ex-proof equipment is special equipment used in potentially explosive atmospheres
